United States: The creamy delicacies on all brunch menus might not only be creamy toppings. Indeed, this common green fruit, yes, it is actually a fruit, is the answer to a good night’s sleep, a recent study conducted in the Journal of the American Heart Association suggests.

The authors followed about a thousand adults aged 25 years and above with abdominal obesity, which means their waist circumference is at least 35 inches or above in women and 40 inches or higher in men. 

Over 26 weeks, one-half of them consumed daily one large Hass avocado with the other half maintaining their normal eating habits that mostly included the intake of less than two avocado fruits in a month, the New York Post reported. 

Naturally, there were significant changes in areas of blood lipids or fatty molecules, such as triglycerides and cholesterol, and their general diet in the avocado consumers group. 

What surprised researchers was that this fashionable toast-topper created better sleep, too. 

According to the researchers, the avocado’s impact on sleep may be due to its powerhouse blend of nutrients, as it’s “rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, dietary fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin K, copper, and pantothenic acid,” the New York Post reported. 

It was also surprising that the consumption of avocados did not see a positive relationship with cardiovascular health, which is, in fact, the initial objective of the research. 

The researchers observed that avocados might help sleep in a diet that is well-balanced and healthy and must not be considered as a single sleep aid. 

“Sleep is emerging as a key lifestyle factor in heart health, and this study invites us to consider how nutrition — and foods like avocado — can play a role in improving it,” as per Dr. Kristina Petersen, study author and associate professor of nutritional sciences at Penn State University. 

“Cardiovascular health is influenced by many factors, and while no single food is a silver bullet, some — like avocados — offer a range of nutrients that support multiple aspects of heart health. This is an encouraging step in expanding the science around avocados and the potential benefits of consumption,” Petersen added. 

Additional reasons to help you sleep better involve reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption, smoking habits, physical activity, and avoiding spending too much time in front of the screen.
